Mark Cleghorn takes us behind the scenes on one of his inspiration workshops. As Mark and the group of keen photographers shoot a winged male dancer on the shores of Wales.

Mark takes the photographers to an interesting rocky beach just 10 minutes from his studios in South Wales. Explaining his approach and giving a general overview of the day, Mark takes us through the variety of different images he captured while explaining how uses focal length to manipulate what the camera sees to capture a different view of the location. Then to add more drama to the image Mark brings in an Elinchrom ELB 400 portable flash unit demonstrating the amazing effect a single flash can have on an image, especially when excluded with the right technique. Moving through the location Mark demonstrates a range of techniques to produce inspirational pieces. To finish off the session Mark adds another flash to the mix to really bring the dancer to life as he leaps through the air.

Mark shoots male hipster fashion on location with the impressive Litemotive Direct softbox from Elinchrom. This enormous softbox helps Mark to create an almost sunlight quality to the lighting wherever the location and whatever the weather, giving him total control to create the exact lighting he wants.

Join Mark for this behind the scenes film on location at the fantastic Fonmon castle, just down the road from our studio in South wales. For this shoot Mark chose a male hipster fashion look and decided to use the Litemotive Direct 190cm to simulate a daylight style of lighting in this large space, giving him total control of the overall light look no matter what the sun was doing outside. Combining this with the ELB400 packs meant he could work throughout the location quickly and easily and gives a perfect consistency of light at all times.

Equipment: Canon 5DMkIII, Canon 24-105mm, Sekonic L-478DR-EL, Elinchrom EL-Skyport Plus, 3x Elinchrom ELB400, 3x Elinchrom Quadra Action Head, Elinchrom Litemotive Direct 190cm

Mark guides you through the fundamentals of working with natural light on location. He takes you through his process of identifying the light in the location, analysing the quality and direction and then positioning and posing the subject to best use the light where it is available.

Learn Marks process as he guides you through how he breaks down a location to use the available light, a skill set which can be applied to any location, no matter how big or small. In this film Mark happens to be at a local castle with Male model AK, but this venue is also a popular wedding venue so these skills are applicable regardless of the venue and subject. Mark begins in the drawing room, using the large windows to provide a direction to the light. Mark explains his metering technique and the choices you need to consider when deciding on how you want to expose the image. Mark then progresses into the dining room, again using the windows but also mixing in practical lights that are also in the room.

Equipment: Canon 5DMkIII, Canon 50mm F1.4, Sekonic L-478DR-EL

By getting the dancer to execute a variety of positions, movements and add their own input, Mark gets a clear idea of the dancers look, abilities and creative input; key aspects for planning future shoots. To capture the images Mark is using four Elinchrom heads two with Maxi Lite Reflectors and two with Litemotiv Strips. Then using the EL-Skyport to switch between groups Mark can create multiple lighting setups in a short amount of time, giving him more time to shoot.

Mark returns with further guidance for The Photographer Academy’s first apprentices John and Osy, as he helps them to further develop both their photography and businesses.

Mark, John and Osy return to John’s studio in this final visit of the Apprentices Re-visited. In this final film of the year Mark demonstrates how once you know how to design and plan your lighting it becomes simple to then apply the same techniques to different styles of lights. To show this Mark re-shoots the same style of image from the first part using continuous lighting, rather than flash. This helps both John and Osy easily see what each light is doing, and the effect it is creating in real time. Then finally there’s just enough time for Mark and the guys sum up their second year together and see how they each feel it has helped them to progress their photography further.
