Mark shoots male hipster fashion on location with the impressive Litemotive Direct softbox from Elinchrom. This enormous softbox helps Mark to create an almost sunlight quality to the lighting wherever the location and whatever the weather, giving him total control to create the exact lighting he wants.

Join Mark for this behind the scenes film on location at the fantastic Fonmon castle, just down the road from our studio in South wales. For this shoot Mark chose a male hipster fashion look and decided to use the Litemotive Direct 190cm to simulate a daylight style of lighting in this large space, giving him total control of the overall light look no matter what the sun was doing outside. Combining this with the ELB400 packs meant he could work throughout the location quickly and easily and gives a perfect consistency of light at all times.

Equipment: Canon 5DMkIII, Canon 24-105mm, Sekonic L-478DR-EL, Elinchrom EL-Skyport Plus, 3x Elinchrom ELB400, 3x Elinchrom Quadra Action Head, Elinchrom Litemotive Direct 190cm

The versatility of each piece of your equipment is something you should really consider when looking to get into off-camera flash. The ability to create different looks with the same equipment not only can save you money but if you’re working in a difficult location the less kit to carry the better. For this fairy-tale styled session the location was worth the climb and Marks choice to use an 8-in-1 umbrella meant he could shoot a wide variety of images quickly, and easily, leaving more time for creativity and less running up and down the hill.

Mark guides you through the fundamentals of working with natural light on location. He takes you through his process of identifying the light in the location, analysing the quality and direction and then positioning and posing the subject to best use the light where it is available.

Learn Marks process as he guides you through how he breaks down a location to use the available light, a skill set which can be applied to any location, no matter how big or small. In this film Mark happens to be at a local castle with Male model AK, but this venue is also a popular wedding venue so these skills are applicable regardless of the venue and subject. Mark begins in the drawing room, using the large windows to provide a direction to the light. Mark explains his metering technique and the choices you need to consider when deciding on how you want to expose the image. Mark then progresses into the dining room, again using the windows but also mixing in practical lights that are also in the room.

Equipment: Canon 5DMkIII, Canon 50mm F1.4, Sekonic L-478DR-EL

Learn how to shoot hotels and restaurtants. Follow Mark on location for this hotel and restaurant commercial shoot. Using the Quantum off camera flash, he shoots the rooms of the hotel for web, print and advertising, producing a combination of empty and occupied images.

We’re back with Mark on location for the James Sommerin’s restaurant and rooms’ commercial shoot. Mark begins by taking a few test shots with James to make sure he is happy with the look of the images, before he fine tunes the flashes and takes the main room shots. The models then arrive and Mark starts with just the female model, using the bay window with the sea in the background to show off the rooms beautiful view and also its key selling point. He then shoots a variety of images with her alone, before bringing the male model in for even more variety. Finally Mark shoots the bathroom and the detail shots and then repeats the whole process in the second bedroom.

Equipment: Canon 5D mkiii, Canon 70-200mm, Canon 24-70mm, Sigma 12-24mm, 3x Quantum Qflash 5d-R, FreeXwire FW9T Transmitter, 2x Quantum QF67A Wide Angle Diffuser,

In this series we join Mark on his Boudoir on Location workshop, live at the SWPP convention 2015. Shot in London’s fantastic Café De Paris, this workshop will guide you through setting up, lighting and shooting Boudoir style images from scratch.
In this third part Mark shows the delegates how easy it is to switch from continuous LED to Speedlite flash, and how this changes the thought process and lighting design as each style of lighting has its own considerations. However, once you know how a given light is going to react setting up should be simple, no matter what the light source. Mark then helps the delegates shoot the set-up, giving them advice and guidance as they look to shoot their own versions of the shot.

In this second part Mark demonstrates how to pose and direct the model to achieve the best out of the chosen bar location. Especially with Boudoir good posing and direction can make or break an image. Attention to detail is key, making sure that the model or client look there absolute best. Simply turning a leg or asking them to suck their stomach can make a world of difference. Another added benefit is it builds rapport and crucially trust with the subject, helping them to relax, which all helps towards a better image.
